COMMENTS Notebook of Accounts of Jucef Zabara, AHG, Notarial Gi2.212 This is a small accounting notebook that Jucef Zabara gave to the accounts revisers of the community in 1443. This is an important document for the history of the Jewish community in Girona because it speaks of different aspects of the everyday life and mentions the usual loans betweens Jews and Christians. The beginning of the documents states, "These are the expenses (incurred) during the time when I was collector, from January 1st, [1]443 until January 1st, [1]444 according to the computation of the Christians. First of all, to obtain a privilege from Your Majesty, Our Lady the Queen, by which we are given possession of the former synagogue and also so that Misser Jofre can examine the document ordering the cancellation of the orders, because there is a chapter which says that any synagogue which is not used for prayer is to remain within the community as part of its property. I paid through Benvenist Samuel, by an appeal for petition, to extend the document and to sign, and all this before Sir Jacme Janer , may God bless him, and all together….2 l, 4s" Income and expenses have separate entries in this document. The income comes from the collection of the aids from the wine, the grapes, the flour, the merchandise, etc., and the names of those who paid are stated. The expenses are those incurred on behalf of the community and the reason for each is mentioned as well as who was involved. The certification of these accounts done by the accounts collectors of the community is on the last page. "We, signed below, as the accounts revisers of the collector, Jucef Zabara for the year [1]443 by the power which is conferred to us by the assembly through Calvo on the 30th of November of [1]444, have examined the accounts from Girona, the income as well as the expenses made during this period, and we saw that the expenses surpass the income in 7 l, 8 s and 7 d and that the collector, Jucef, should collect the sum of 7 l, 8 s and 7 d in which the expenses surpass the income. Bonastruc de Piera Adret, Astruc Aninay" Many Catalan words appear in Hebrew script, for example: àpoca, cens, censal, Martror [All Saints], neules, Nadal, deemre[December], noemre[November], setemre, remission, percurador, sobreseïment, capítols, executòria, assesor, procés, etc. Apart from the Jewish names, the names of Christians are also numerous, such as, Misser Jofre, Mossen Jacme Janer, Nicolau Frugell, Pere Falcon, etc. |
