Entirely pure. Jewish women and ritual baths

Girona

Lighted pictures of European Mikwaot (ritual baths). Around the concept of mikweh and womanhood in Judaism.

Its author is photographer Peter Seidel (Frankfurt), who shows the diversity of design and structures of some Jewish ritual baths of Europe, finding their most intimate and profound concept. Thereby, mikweh is presented as a real place where history becomes alive and palpable.

Recent archaeological findings at the Girona Jewish quarter have uncovered the remains of fifteenth century mikweh. This space has been photographed by Josep M. Oliveras and it also forms part of the exhibition.

The exhibition is complemented by texts about the relationship of Jewish women with mikveh today from various sources. Personal and often controversial testimonies bring us closer to the tradition of this ritual, and also to the manifestation of a new Jewish spirituality.

Opening: Friday, April 11 at 7 pm at the temporary exhibition hall of the Museum of Jewish History (8, Força street, Girona).

Dissident Girona

Girona

Exhibition which is part of 'Girona in modern times. From the workshop to the bastion (16th to 18th centuries)'

This exhibition focuses on the converted society of Girona, to try to discover the often hidden history of those who were baptized against their will in order to save their lives. For that people they were secret and confinement times, and ultimately, forced assimilation and oblivion; times of expulsion, marginalization, conversion and dissidence. But somehow those were also times of persistence, maintenance of traditions, survival of ancestral beliefs and a safeguard of a collective identity who left its mark on the social and symbolic structure of the city. This exhibition complements "Girona in modern times. From the workshop to the bastion" located in the Museum of History of Girona. Organized by Patronat Call de Girona

BARCELONA HAGGADOT. The Jewish Splendour of Catalan Gothic Period. Exhibition extended with digital facsimiles until Sept. 27th

Barcelona

Barcelona, the seat of a monarchy and a hub of Mediterranean trade, had an urban ethos that was receptive to the most innovative artistic influences in the opening decades of the 14th century. At this juncture in the Gothic era, the city’s workshops constituted a highly active centre for the production of Haggadot, manuscripts that contain the ritual of the Passover meal, which were commissioned by families living in the Call (Jewish quarter) in Barcelona and in other Jewish communities. Jews and Christians alike worked on Haggadot and shared the same style and iconographic models.

The exhibition Barcelona Haggadot reunites for the first time in more than six centuries an extensive selection of these splendid works of the Catalan Gothic period that were dispersed around the world when the Jews were expelled.

Exhibition extended with digital facsimiles from July 11th until September 27th 2015

And I still see their faces

Girona

The exhibition entitled "And I Still See Their Faces. Photographs of Polish Jews" is an initiative of the Shalom Foundation, which in 1994 launched an appeal for people to send in any photos they hadof Polish Jews taken prior to the Holocaust. They began to get pictures from the most diverse places from Poland and the farthest corners of the world. Some of these photographs have been kept as precious memories, others were preserved in forgotten corners, relegated to attics and basements.

This exhibition can be interpreted as a lament for a vanished world, which can only be remembered by watching old photographs. Museums in several countries preserved photographs of famous Polish Jews: musicians, painters and writers. But it lacked the memory of the common people, usually ignored by History. With this exhibition, the Shalom Foundation has recovered this memory. Thus, we have been able to preserve the names of that people and today they are part of the collective memory of Europe.

"The Righteous are those who have saved one life. This title is also deserved by those who saved the memory". Those are precisely the ones who have actually made possible this exhibition.

An exhibition of the Shalom Foundation presented in Girona with the co-operation of the General Consulate of the Republic of Poland in Barcelona and the Museum of Jewish History.

Legacy: The human landscape of the Calls

Girona

The Museum of Jewish History has organized an exhibition on the families, surnames and people related to the Jewish past of some Catalan cities. These family names constitute an immaterial legacy that goes beyond the physical and monumental legacy that these cities also have.

The institutions that worked to recover Jewish historic heritage have generally focused on the material heritage, the physical vestiges that the visitor can be shown, the archaeological or architectural remains. That has at times left the inhabitants of medieval Jewish quarters in the background. When all is said and done, it was they who were responsible for all the material legacy that has survived to the present day.

The goal of this exhibition is to present the names of the main Jewish families who were one day part of the country. It is based on research conducted on the written documentation about the families linked to some of the most representative medieval calls (Jewish quarters) of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.

Conversion or exile led them on very different paths. We can still trace some of those personal and family itineraries. Other traces remain in the oral memory of some of the families scattered throughout the world after 1492 and also manifest themselves through their surnames, which have been transmitted for generations within Sephardic communities. By taking back their names, we recover their memory.

Symbolic Architectures. The Gates of the Jewry

The exhibition is organised in 3 areas:

Outer doors > doors of life and exile
Doors to the holy areas > doors of the synagogues
Doors to the private areas > doors of the houses

Erensya 2015. Human landscape

A research project examining the life of the Jewish families living in the member cities of the Network, the context of this life and what has become of the descendants of those families after the expulsion in 1492.

Following a bibliographic review of what is known about these families, the biographies of outstanding families and personalities from each of the 24 member cities of the Network of Spanish Jewish Quarters have been sketched.

All this information is complemented by images of the different Jewish quarters of those cities, which are shown on screens.

The 24 cities forming the Network of Spanish Jewish Quarters (Ávila, Barcelona, Besalú, Cáceres, Calahorra, Castelló d’Empúries, Córdoba, Estella-Lizarra, Girona, Hervás, Jaén, León, Lucena, Monforte de Lemos, Oviedo, Palma, Plasencia, Ribadavia, Segovia, Sevilla, Tarazona, Toledo, Tortosa and Tudela), have been working for many years in the recovery of their Jewish quarters, restoring houses, streets, palaces, etc.

Itinerary of the exhibition:

  • Calahorra: 17 April to 3 May 2015

  • Segovia: 10 to 31 July 2015

  • Ribadavia: 12 August to 30 September 2015

  • Lucena: January to 31 March 2016

  • Plasencia: 15 April to 8 May 2016

  • Girona: 17 June to September 2016

  • Córdoba: October to December 2016

With this project, another kind of recovery has been initiated: the recovery of knowledge about the lives of Jewish families from different parts and of different social conditions, bibliographically documented between the 10th and 15th century, whose trajectory until present days we would like to know.

This exhibition is part of the actions to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the creation of the Network of Spanish Jewish Quarters – Routes of Sefarad.
